Calviá lifeguards linked to the Union de Socorristas plan a strike this Sunday to demand better working conditions and lifeguard services, targeting beaches popular with British tourists.
Reasons for the strike
Workers claim that the Calviá Town Hall has repeatedly ignored their demands, calling negotiations “mistreatment and disregard.” They also accuse mayor Juan Antonio Amengual and his advisers of a lack of political will and arrogance.
Conditions demanded
The union calls for repairs to deteriorated lifeguard towers, expansion of the service for people with reduced mobility (currently only 4 of 11 beaches), and improvements to communication infrastructure, as some lifeguards must use their own mobile phones to activate emergency procedures. They also allege systematic errors in wage payments.
Expected impact
The lifeguards describe the strike as a “drastic” measure following repeated failed negotiations, claiming that the current conditions risk the health of workers and the safety of the thousands of daily visitors to Calviá’s beaches.
